Microcurrent Facials - Everything You Need to Know
We have been searching for the Fountain of Youth for years with no luck. Although we cannot stop the hands of time, we can reverse some signs of aging and slow down the aging process significantly with microcurrent technology.
Let's find out about the basics of a microcurrent facial, including how it works, the results, and who would benefit from this incredible treatment.
What is Microcurrent Therapy
Microcurrent uses pulsating or wave-like current to mimic your body's bio-electrical energy that takes place at a cellular level. These low-grade electrical currents or waves retrain the muscles in your skin that gravity and aging have affected to once again lift, tighten, and firm. You will often hear a microcurrent treatment in the skincare industry referred to as a non-invasive facelift or a lunch-time facelift.
Microcurrent has been around since the 1970s in the medical and aesthetic industry. The medical industry has used microcurrent as it enhances healing. It has been used to treat pain, neuropathy caused by diabetes, macular degeneration in the eye, balls palsy, and ruptured tendons and ligaments, to name a few.
Did you know that all 32 facial muscles are attached to the skin? This is why microcurrent can be a game-changer for facial toning!
Treatment Known as the Fork Face Lift or Madonna Facial
At Skintopia, we use the Neurotris SX-3800 microcurrent machine, the most technologically advanced facial sculpting system available. The system has patent-breakthrough technology using specific frequencies to directly communicate with the muscles via the neurological pathways and target communication on a cellular level.
Neurotris microcurrent is known in the public eye as Madonna's "Fork Face Lift Facial." These "forks" are known as Pico probes that have four different prongs. Each prong outputs an independent signal, not associated with the other, providing more volume during the treatment. This signal/frequency is one-of-a-kind and only available with a Neurotris face sculpting machine.
What to Expect at Your Microcurrent Treatment
A Microcurrent treatment will start out much like a regular facial, beginning with a cleansing and enzyme mask which exfoliates the skin. Skin-specific peptides are then applied, followed by a water-based conductive gel. Your esthetician will note your specific areas of concern. Using the microcurrent device's probes and gloves, the skin will be lifted in sections, staying in place for a few seconds in some areas, and then repeating before moving to the next area.
There is no pain or discomfort though some might experience a slight tingle. Clients who have heart conditions or pacemakers are not candidates because it stimulates the blood. Pregnant women are also advised not to receive microcurrent during their first trimester.
What if I Get Botox and Fillers?
If you've had fillers or Botox, you need to wait two weeks for it to settle before getting a microcurrent treatment. During those two weeks, filler and Botox can shift, and we don't want to alter the results. However, Botox and Fillers can actually work better when you get microcurrent because it'll make the results from the injectables last longer. When we work those muscles that have been paralyzed, they will remember to stay where they are meant to stay.
Changes the Skin Can Experience with a Microcurrent Facial
Hydration: Because the microcurrent treatment will send micro-electrical currents into the skin, it will trigger ATP (Adenosine triphosphate) production that helps improve the cell's ability to function. This improves oxygen and hydration levels in your skin.
Blood and Lymphatic Flow: The microcurrent pulses stimulate the blood flow in the skin, giving the skin a healthy glow and flushing the lymphatic system of any toxins the skin may be holding onto.
Volume: With the blood and lymphatic systems being stimulated, along with the increase of oxygen and hydration at a cellular level, the micro-electrical currents stimulate the muscle contraction, which leads to a more toned facial structure.
Firmness: Many will see anti-aging results such as eyes more lifted, fine lines and wrinkles diminished, cheeks firmer and more lifted, and necks that may be loose and turkey-looking, firmed and tightened. Since the microcurrent is stimulating the ATP, this creates collagen and elastin generation.
Radiance: When the skin cell life is extended because of the oxygen and hydration received during a microcurrent treatment, the skin cells on the surface will reflect light more easily to have your skin radiant and glowing for days.
Lip Plumping: Yes, the lips are muscle and can plump up with this treatment. Like many other benefits, with the hydration and oxygen levels increased, the lips will plump up with volume. Can we say, kiss me, baby!?
How Often Should I Receive the Treatments?
Clients under 40 years old: 6 - 8 treatments over 3 - 4 weeks.
Clients 40 - 50 years old: 10 - 12 treatments over 5 - 6 weeks.
Clients 50 and older 15 - 20 treatments over 9 - 12 weeks.
Smokers, sunbathers, or clients with a history of toxic substances may require 15 - 20 treatments. Treatments should be performed 48-72 hours apart during a full series. After a completed series, I recommend once a month for maintenance.
How Long do the Results Last?
Even though the results of the treatment are instant, they do not stop the aging process permanently. The Neurotris treatments are cumulative. Initially, treatments should be performed in a series followed by treatments every four to six weeks to maintain and build upon the results.
Simply put, it’s just like going to the gym! It's a workout for your face, and repeat treatments improve muscle tone. It helps to view microcurrent treatments in the same way we view exercising the body. Once muscle memory is achieved, the skin will hold its firmness and lift, longer. A full series followed with monthly maintenance will give you the best results.
